Larry Magarik, Esq. is an Attorney, Independent Fiduciary and Professional Trustee. Mr. Magarik represents pension, health and other employee benefit plans, and also represents and advises labor unions, workers and retirees in all aspects of ERISA, benefits and related tax law, labor law, collective bargaining, contract negotiations, grievances and arbitration, and litigation. He serves as an Independent Fiduciary and Professional Trustee for a number of benefit plans by nomination or appointment of the Federal Courts, United States Department of Labor and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
Mr. Magarik’s father was a cutter in the garment industry and a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and his mother was a bookkeeper. He graduated Yale University and received his B.A. cum laude with distinction in American Studies in 1974, and studied at Cornell University New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations (1973). Mr. Magarik was an Organizer with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. He was a Root-Tilden Scholar for Public Service at and graduated New York University Law School with a J.D. in 1978. He was admitted to the Bar (New York 1979, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, Second, Third and Fourth Circuit Courts of Appeal, visiting attorney District Courts of California, Connecticut and New Jersey).
Mr. Magarik has represented numerous benefit funds, unions, workers and retirees in the private, public, non-profit, industrial, professional and clerical fields. He is the author of articles in Benefits Law Journal, has lectured for the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans, and taught extensively at Cornell University New York School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Empire Labor College, and in numerous union and other programs.
Mr. Magarik was a staff attorney for the ILGWU, an associate and then partner at Sipser Weinstock Harper & Dorn, and of counsel to Kennedy Jennik & Murray, PC. He lives in Brooklyn, NY and is also a singer and author and teacher of Biblical and related topics.
Mr. Magarik has also served as an Arbitrator on the dispute resolution panels of the New Jersey Mediation Board, New York Employment Relations Board (now part of PERB), American Health Lawyers Association and NASD-FINRA. He is a member of the New York City Bar Association.
